Third Trimester: Gestational Diabetes (Late Post)
Well guys, I am officially in my third trimester. I won't lie...it's been rough. I am now 34 weeks prego and if I had the choice to deliver...I WOULD. But I know that God is still working on making our beautiful baby girl and it isn't time yet. SIGH. SIX WEEKS TO GO!! WOOHOO!!
How have I been doing?
Glucose Tolerance Test Results: Positive for Gestational Diabetes
Unfortunaltely, I have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I'm not new to this, but things have changed since I last had it which was 11 years ago. For those of you not familiar with gestational diabetes, it is a condition in which a woman that does not have diabetes exhibits high blood glucose levels during pregnancy. It should go away after delivery, but if you don't take care of yourself or the baby, you both have a higher chance of developing Type 2 Diabetes later on in life and the chances of delivering a still born baby is higher as well.
I really take this seriously because my son was almost diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes a few months ago. He doesn't look overweight, but he doesn't eat as good as he should be eating. As parents, we want to spoil our kids and we didn't realize that we were hurting him more than helping him when it came to food choices. Fortunately, we changed ALL OF OUR LIFESTYLE eating habits and he is doing great! YAY! We all are eating healthy , but in my case...Gestational Diabetes just happened. I can't say I've been perfect with my diet, but since I've been diagnosed with GD I've been doing really good! Except, my body doesn't think so. LOL. The doctor said that it is nothing that I could have done to prevent it this time around because of my history with GD and the list of things that put me at risk for GD. I would have had to work on weight loss way before pregnancy and my age, weight, and history of GD increased those chances.
As of now, I'm taking Metformin 500mg in pill form twice a day. One in the morning and one at night. I have to check my blood sugar in the morning when I wake up, after breakfast, after lunch, and after dinner (four times daily). My fasting sugar has been slightly elevated so the Dr. suggested that if it doesn't drop that I will have to take 1000mg of Metformin at night. I REALLY DONT WANT TO!!!
Taking medication during pregnancy already gives me anxiety! I know the Dr's are taking extra precautions to take care of me and the baby, but I can't control how I feel about this.
The other issues that I have been dealing with are:
Pelvic Pain and Pressure- It hurts! It doesn't matter what I do! Sitting or standing...the pain is there....Tylenol gives me a little relief....
Nasal Congestion- I can't breathe. It's not constant, it's just a nuisance when it happens.
Dehydration & Diarrhea- If you're pregnant....drink LOTS of water. I mean ALOT. Being dehydrated is NO JOKE during pregnancy. Especially when it causes contractions, diarhea, and a visit to the hospital. You don't want that to happen. It isn't fun.
Hip Pain- I already have issues with hip pain, but pregnancy intensifies it. It's so uncomfortable and it makes it really hard to do ANYTHING.
Frequent Urination- The baby is sitting on my bladder. I have to pee ALOT! Add that to all the extra water that you have to drink to avoid dehydration. Oi Vei!!
Neck Pain- Another problem I already had before pregnancy, but intensified during pregnancy. I asked the Dr. if it was normal and it is. It's the added weight in the belly that pulls muscles in the neck area. Isn't pregnancy fun?
